Birds Dive Fast & Low

 Birds Dive Fast & Low

Right in front of my car, birds have swept low,
wing tips so close to the pavement it seems

as if they will hurt themselves. Every time

I’m startled and worried, but in a blink the bird

vanishes, low and left. Gone. Before I can even

touch the brake.   Showing off? Protesting?

Maybe it’s just a risky sport for teen boy birds.

They’ve had a hundred plus years to perfect these

acrobatic acts of defiance, so maybe no piles

of feathered bodies litter our roadsides. But it’s

sunny out there.  Maybe I'll just go for a walk along

Rte. 302, check for small feathered casualties.
