Don't Open the Weighty Book

 Don’t Open the Weighty Book

Because browsing there
will make your heart crouch,

will blister your eyes—

Clap it shut before you learn

too much of what is

unpreventable.

What good to know

just where & when

the blows will come?

History hurts too much—

its long, long list of names

carved into memorials

in public plazas—

unendurable.

You know there will be

no miracle, no mystic

renewal to save us—

Rebirth is a hoax,

Let’s end here with

caustic finality.
