 Dire Wolves

White wolf puppies gambol and tussle on the lawn

as their indulgent minders shake their heads, still

stunned by their success in bringing back the wolf

of 10.000 years ago, still delighting in the puppy-like

behavior of the species— it never gets old.

Could we tame these two, raise them as 21st century 

dogs?  Will the dog shows soon feature a dire wolf

breed?   How chique to train a dire wolf to come 

to heel on command!  Everyone will want a pair! 

Which design house will be first to feature them 

on the runway?  Imagine the first dire wolf fashion

spread in Vogue!

Maybe there will be whispered stories about the 

disappearance of neighborhood cats.  Of a dire 

pup returning from a brief neighborhood romp 

with blood dripping from his muzzle…  Or the 

neighbor’s toy poodle found dead in front of its 

kennel, neck broken as if it has been seized in 

powerful jaws and shaken.  How dire!
